1. How to Use the Virtual Via Veneto Time Machine

The pages within the VVV (Virtual Via Veneto Time Machine) rely on graphics based intuition to lead you to a subject area you may be interested in. The pages are still in construction - eventually there will be alternative text - based links built into the pages for non - graphics based browsers, my apologies at this stage for the lack of this feature.

The main banner at the top of each page acts as a hypertext link. It will always take you back to the VVV 'Home' - the welcome page.

The buttons at the bottom of each page take you to the introductory pages for each of the main categories, but note, within these there are many sub categories to explore - hypertext links will suggest where you should find these. As a clue, the VVV acts much like a conversation at a Cafe table, when a fresh coffee comes along often the opportunity arises for a fresh route of conversation....

The Apple button is my little thank you to Apple for the fairly tiny computer I own, it has served me very well and wasn't very expensive - a Performa 6200/75. I also used a Apple Colour Onescanner and Video in card to produce these pages.

I know not everyone uses the same computer so I welcome all users; this brings us on to the next category.....

2. The Software and Hardware you may need

This site was .: this seems to produce pages that suit most browsers from late 1995 onwards.

It works very well in the author's favourite browser; Netscape 3.01. This and other Netscape products can be obtained by following the links from here:

There are sound files on the VVV pages encoded using the RealAudio format. You can download free software to listen to these for many, many platforms and machine types from their site.

Finally. there is a QuickTime movie on the VVV. This has been 'flattened' for use on any platform that will play QuickTime movies. Players for Mac, Windows 95 and 3,1 are available form the QuickTime site.

Hardware

There are quite a number of JPEG and GIF graphics on some of the pages. Compression methods have been used to keep the file sizes small whilst retaining clarity. Nevertheless, some are quite big (approx 100k). This might be an issue on older computers with slower processors or on slower modems. The site has been trialled successfully on the following two machine types:

To hear the sound in the quicktime movie and Real Audio files your machine must have an appropriate sound card - this will vary from machine to machine and platform to platform.

The VVV author is only familiar with the sound requirements for Apple Macs - these will need the latest version of Sound Manager - this is usually installed as standard, but updates are available from the Apple link at the bottom of any VVV page.

There seems to be no sound problem with Amigas using Shapeshifter.

Please contact the author at the email address below if you experience any unique hardware or browser specific problems on this particular site - every effort will be made to adapt the site for the largest possible number of user types.
